Operation and Cleaning of Laminar Air Flow:-
Definition:-
Laminar flow is defined as airflow in which the entire body of air within a defined space is uniform in both velocity and direction.
Principle of Laminar Air Flow
Laminar flow refers to the ability of fluid particles to move in a smooth path, with each layer moving parallel to the other. This concept has been used in the design of many aerodynamic and hydrodynamic systems to increase efficiency by reducing friction drag.

OBJECTIVE
- To lay down the procedure for operation and cleaning of Laminar Air Flow.

SCOPE
- This SOP shall be applicable for operation and cleaning of Laminar Air Flow at Microbiology Department .

RESPONSIBILITY
- Microbiology Personnel shall be responsible for the operation and cleaning of Laminar Air Flow as per established procedure, maintaining its documents, recording observations and reporting the results.
- Officer Microbiology or above who is trained or well versed with the procedure shall be responsible for ensuring that the same is carried out correctly and checking of documents for completeness of content.
- Head – Microbiology/ Designee shall be responsible for the compliance of the SOP.

ACCOUNTABILITY
- Microbiology – Head/ Designee shall be accountable for the proper implementation of SOP.

PROCEDURE
- Operation:
- Connect three-pin plug of LAF with the main power supply.
- Switch ON main power supply.
- Switch ON the ON/OFF switch of LAF.
- Sanitize the working surface with a disinfectant solution with 70 % v/v filtered Isopropyl alcohol
- Switch ON ‘UV’ light at least for 15 minutes before starting the work.
- Allow the condition to stabilize for 15 Minutes.
- Before the start of work, switch OFF the UV light & switch ON tube light.
- The differential pressure shall be between 7-15 mmwc. If the differential pressure observed beyond limit then inform the maintenance.
- After completion of work, clean & sanitize the work surface with disinfectant solution with 70 % v/v isopropyl alcohol.
- Switch OFF the tube light. Switch ON ‘UV’ light at least for 30 minutes.
- Record the U.V. light burning status in Annexure-I. After completion of 8000 hours replace the UV Light.
- Daily record the Magnehelic gauge observation in Annexure-I.

Cleaning:
- Frequency of cleaning : Daily
- Take out all the materials from LAF and place it on SS Container/ Table
- Wipe the working surface, the side glasses and outer body of LAF with a cloth soaked in 70 % v/v isopropyl alcohol and record the cleaning details in Annexure-I.
- Cleaning of pre-filters should be performed as per respective SOP of Engineering department

Requalification:
- Requalification of LAF is done by external agency.
- Particle count once in 1 year.
- Air velocity in once in a year.
- Integrity test of HEPA filters once in 1 year.
